HOLYOKE: Walter M. Walkowicz, age 90, of Holyoke, a loving husband, father and grandfather, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 12, 2017 at the Holyoke Soldier's Home. A lifelong resident of Holyoke, he was a son of the late Michael and Victoria (Hudyka) Walkowicz and was a graduate of Holyoke High School. Walter was a United States Navy Veteran of World War II, and owned and managed the Sportsman's Café in Holyoke for many years. He was predeceased by his wife Shirley (Geissler) Walkowicz in 2015. They were married in 1951 and raised their family in Holyoke. Walter is survived by four loving children: Stephen Walkowicz of Amherst, Mary Ann Westcott and her husband Stewart of Holyoke, William Walkowicz and his wife Patricia of Granby, and Linda Beal and her husband Peter of North Reading, eleven grandchildren, four great grandchildren, a sister Irene Lucchesi, a sister-in-law Heleane Glidden of Holyoke, a brother-in-law Francis Sheehan of Florence, and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents and wife, Walter was predeceased by two sons, Michael and Walter, a brother Casimir, and a sister Chestra. Calling hours will be held Friday, March 17th from 8:30 to 10:00 a.m. at the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton Street, followed by a Mass in Blessed Sacrament Church, 1945 Northampton Street at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow at Saint Jerome Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Holyoke Soldier's Home, 110 Cherry Street, Holyoke MA 01040.
